Alive (Not Yet Dead), 2015 -
Interactive NewHive Installation.
Installed at UT Austin for Queer Terrortories, Nov 2016
The #NotYetDead project asks self-identified Black women and femmes to post selfies to social media using a pastel backdrop
I designed and adorned with the word ALIVE, captioned with the hashtag NotYetDead. The project began as a response to police brutality, specifically after there was no indictment for the murder of Sandra Bland in January 2015. The project aims to defy the narrative of Black women and femmes as only dead and dying at the hands of the police by focusing on the women who are still here, still alive, still resisting.
For the installation, I placed the selfies of the Black women and femmes into a NewHive site along with a 3D graphic of the word ALIVE I designed and animated. The names of all the participants is at the bottom of the site. Viewers were invited to scroll through the images of the women via a trackpad.
